Think Tank – Towards 2nd century cinema

Industry colleagues were invited on July 2, 2012 for a brainstorming session with NFDC on what the Industry currently needs from the film development corporation. With Marten Rabarts now as Head of Development NFDC orgainsed a one day workshop with several film industry professionals to arrive at the best way forward to encourage and produce 'Quality Independent Indian Cinema'.

Film producers, writers & directors attended the workshop. Producer Guneet Monga producer with Anurag Kashyap Films, filmmakers Ketan Mehta, Rakyesh Om Prakash Mehra, Shimit Amin, Onir, Sudhir Mishra, Zoya Akhtar, Girish Kulkarni & Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni among others. Debutant filmmakers Ashim Ahluwalia, the director of the edgy Miss Lovely and Manjeet Singh director of the popular film festival circuit sprinter Mumbai Cha Raja also attended. Director Ruchi Narain, actor Rajat Kapoor and Debutant writer-Director Ritesh Batra who is making a film titled Dabba with (Anurag Kashyap Films) AKFPL along with acclaimed scriptwriter Urmi Juvekar known for films like Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Rules – Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula & the recent Shanghai were also a part of the NFDC Think Tank team.

The workshop was conceived to understand the key roles that NFDC could play to enhance the sustainability of the Independent filmmaking community. About how NFDC could smoothen the path towards film finance | funding | distribution| co-productions for them and to gauge the extent of involvement required by the corporation in every project it chooses to produce from the industry's perspective. The workshop encouraged professionals to come up with solutions for the setbacks one may face within the industry.

A one-day workshop, the brainstorming was broken down into Morning Sessions & Afternoon Breakaways where participants were asked to deliberate on questions likeWho are we & how do we get to be this way? And how the creative journey of independent filmmaker is different from the mainstream process. The afternoon sessions involved groups who were given a dream to work on. The session involved groups to Dream about their version of the ideal 'distribution dream, development and so on.
