Shibnath Mukherjee, a freedom fighter who dreams of an ideal world, is released after years in jail and a stint in the mental asylum. A former comrade, Bipin Gupta, takes him to a remote village in order to reunite him with his wife and two sons. His younger son Jyoti was born after Shibnath had been sentenced and the two meet for the first time. Shibnath finds himself alienated from his family and the world to which he has returned. However, his colleagues, in particular Bipin Gupta, want to enlist his help for the forthcoming elections. But Shibnath feels that they are corrupting his dreams and rejects their overtures. Only Jyoti can understand his father's dreams since he shares them. One day, a visiting magician mesmerizes Shibnath and makes him perform degrading tasks. Shibnath breaks out of his trance and strangles the magician. In chains, he is transported back to the asylum from where he was released.
