Rakheswar Bora is a middle-aged farmer who, with his wife and two children, ekes out a simple and precarious living from his small plot of land. One day, however, Bora's land is taken over by a rich villager Sonatan Sharma, because Bora has no written record of ownership. Failing to find a simple bureaucratic solution to his problem, Bora eventually sells his most precious possession, a pair of bullocks, and files a case against Sonatan. Following the inevitable twists and turns of the law and bribing his way through the network, Bora eventually loses everything that he owns. At a critical juncture, the Sub Deputy Collector intervenes and prevails upon Sonatan to return the land hinting that he will lose the forthcoming elections, since Bora's case has been widely publicized. Bora's joy is short-lived when he discovers that he has nothing with which to till the land. At last, the quiet farmer revolts against the system.
